Different types of pool jets are available; some are part of the hydraulic circuit, such as pipes, skimmers, and bottom drains. The others are there to massage bathers, provide a current against which to swim, clean the pool, or even decorate the pool.

We will show you the various pool jets and explain how each works. Once you identify which ones should be installed in your future swimming pool with skimmer or overflow, you can decide.

Jets connected to the pool filtration

Because they are incorporated into the masonry of the swimming pool, they must be installed at the time of construction or renovation of the pool. PVC is the most common material, but stainless steel is also available; however, these are extremely costly.

The return inlet

Traditionally, this part is found in swimming pools with skimmers as well as in infinity pools and deck-level pools. It is generally located on the wall opposite the skimmers or overflows, approximately 16 inches (ca. 41 cm) below the water surface. As it is adjustable, it directs the flow of water entering the pool. Three functions are performed by it:

  • Let the water back into the pool after it’s been filtered.

  • Send waste and impurities to the filtration unit by creating a current that pushes them towards the skimmers or overflow.

  • Ensure better distribution of water treatment products by mixing water.

Regardless of the size of the pool, discharge nozzles are a standard feature in every swimming pool. There is a direct correlation between their quantity and the filtration pump flow rate. We’ll tell you how to pick the right pool pump.

Note: Colored inlets are available for better integration into pool walls.

The bottom return inlet

Located at the bottom of the pool, these strategically placed jets allow water to return to the pool. There are primarily two types of pools that use this material: the infinity pools and the zero-edge pools. There are several functions associated with this bottom inlets:

  1. Enhanced Water Circulation: The primary advantage of bottom return inlets is improved water circulation. By pushing water from the bottom of the pool towards the surface, they prevent stagnant areas, minimizing debris buildup and promoting effective filtration.
  2. Uniform Water Temperature: Bottom return inlets facilitate the distribution of heated or cooled water throughout the pool. This ensures a consistent water temperature, eliminating any uncomfortable cold spots or uneven heating.
  3. Efficient Chemical Distribution: With bottom return inlets, chemical distribution becomes more efficient. By dispersing chemicals evenly throughout the pool, they help maintain optimal water balance and reduce the need for excessive chemical usage.

Don’t confuse the bottom return inlet with the bottom drain.

Jets for in-floor cleaning system

As with the bottom return inlet, these jets sweep the pool bottom, but much more efficiently. Essentially, the circuit consists of a valve installed in the technical room with side outlet nozzles. Based on automatic watering, this system sequentially cleans all parts of the pool floor. It offers an excellent alternative to a robot or manual pool vacuum.

For this option to work, pipes must be installed during pool construction. In addition to being connected to the swimming pool filtration pump, it does not require any special maintenance. The “Net’N’clean” from Fluidra -Astral is one of the best-known models.

Morana's advice 👇

The jets should be directed towards a specific objective

Determine the purpose of the jets in your pool before choosing them.  It is important to determine the main purpose of the jet to select the best type of jet for your application.

A swimming pool equipment specialist can help

There are many options and technical specifications associated with pool jets. An expert in swimming pool equipment is recommended to make an informed choice.

Pool jets that work on their own

These pool jets require a special pump to operate. There are various types of jets, each with its own characteristics and functions.

Massage jets

By installing massage jets in the swimming pool, you will be able to enjoy the benefits of balneotherapy. Various types are available, and we select them according to the desired effect: massaging, relaxing, and playful.

Venturi jet

The combination of water and air coming out of the nozzle provides a massaging effect in the pool or spa. The hydraulic circuit incorporates a high-flow pump known as a “booster”. There is a button on the edge of the pool that controls the amount of ambient air that enters the pool. Air and water are mixed through the “venturi” system integrated into the nozzle.

Air jet

Soft air jets provide a relaxing effect. Air is expelled in the form of bubbles, which are more or less fine in texture. A blower sends air to specific nozzles through the system. You can place the jets on the ground up to a depth of 50 inches (1.27 m), or in the seat of a bench.

Swim against the current

It may be worthwhile to install a counter-current swimming system in small pools. There is generally a jet located on one side of the pool that delivers a powerful water current against which to swim. To complete this installation, a high-power pump must be installed near the swimming pool. Depending on the type of pool you are building, there is equipment that has to be integrated into the masonry or there is equipment that is built “outboard” for an existing swimming pool.

Jet for fun and entertainment

It is intended to provide entertainment or amusement for the children by using these jets. There is usually a discharge nozzle attached to the device, which can be placed on one side of the pool or floating in the middle. The floating jets are available in various forms and even come in a luminous version that creates a magical nighttime ambience. For a more permanent version, it is advisable to plan waterfalls or fountains when building the pool.

Various pool jets are available; some are essential for the correct operation of a swimming pool, while others provide comfort to the user or enhance the appearance of the pool and its surroundings. It is unfortunate that options are often overlooked when designing a swimming pool.

If you are considering building a skimmer or an infinity pool, you should seek professional advice! As a result, he will be able to show you the equipment corresponding to your wishes and desires, and plan the hydraulic circuits necessary to ensure its proper operation.
